Top 100 Rock Songs of the 21st Century: Part 1 (#100-50)

I was inspired to do this countdown by talking with a friend who claimed “rock is dead.” While the golden age of rock music may be past us, there are still many great rock bands making great rock songs today. I decided to highlight my personal top 100 rock songs that have been released in this century so far to disprove my friend’s point.

Criteria: I chose songs based on mainly personal preferences, though I took into account critical and commercial popularity. However, critically and commercially successful artists (Nickelback, Creed, etc.) that I just don’t like were not featured. Sorry if you’re a fan of those bands. I wanted to get some variety so I tried to pull from many different subgenres of rock like alternative, metal, indie, etc. I tried to limit the amount of songs featured per artist. Pretty much all of the songs on here are singles, so I decided to pass on highlighting lesser known songs from the featured artists. The dates shown with each song are reflective of when they were released with the album they are featured on, not their single release dates. Singles released in 2000 that were featured on albums from 1999 were not included.

I will freely admit that the ranking of the songs is completely arbitrary. My opinions on songs change daily, so coming up with a ranking of 100 songs was an absolute nightmare. Please don’t freak out if your favorite song is low on the list. The point of this video is not necessarily the ranking of each song, but rather to highlight stand-out modern rock music. That said, I’m sure I forgot some really obvious songs, so feel free to tell me what a moron I am for leaving out whatever songs I left out.
