D’yer Mak’er – Led Zeppelin (1973)

“D’yer Mak’er” (intended to be pronounced in a British non-rhotic accent as ‘Jamaica’, /dʒəˈmeɪkə/) was a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin, from their 1973 album “Houses Of The Holy”. This song was meant to imitate reggae and its ‘dub’ derivative emerging from Jamaica in the early 1970s. Its genesis is traced to Led Zeppelin’s rehearsals at Stargroves in 1972, when drummer John Bonham started with a beat similar to 1950s doo-wop, and then twisted it into a slight off-beat tempo, upon which a reggae influence emerged. The distinctive drum sound was created by placing three microphones a good distance away from Bonham’s drums. “D’yer Mak’er” is one of the few Led Zeppelin songs where all four members share the composer credit. The sleeve on the album also gives tribute to Rosie And The Originals, a reference to the doo-wop influence which was evident in the song’s style. This track, as well as another song entitled “The Crunge”, was initially not taken seriously by many listeners, and some critics at the time reserved their harshest criticism for these two tracks. Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones has also expressed his distaste for the song, suggesting that it started off as a joke and wasn’t thought through carefully enough. However, “D’yer Mak’er” has gathered critical respect in the years since, and has grown into a Led Zeppelin classic. Upon the album’s release, Robert Plant was keen to issue the track as a single in the United Kingdom. Atlantic Records went so far as to distribute advance promotional copies to DJs (now valuable collectors’ items). While it was released in the U.S., and the single peaked at #20 in December 1973, it was ultimately never released in the U.K. The name of the song is derived from an old joke: “My wife’s gone to the West Indies.” “Jamaica?” (which has a similar pronunciation as “D’you make her?”) “No, she went of her own accord”. The title, which appears nowhere in the lyrics, was chosen because it reflects the reggae flavor of the song. Robert Plant has said that he finds it amusing when fans completely ignore the apostrophes and pronounce it as “Dire Maker”. Led Zeppelin were an English rock band. Formed in 1968 in London, the group consisted of guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham and bassist John Paul Jones. With their heavy, guitar-driven blues-rock sound, Led Zeppelin are regularly cited as one of the progenitors of heavy metal and hard rock, even though the band’s individualistic style drew from many sources and transcends any one music genre. More than thirty years after disbanding following Bonham’s death in 1980, Led Zeppelin continue to be held in high regard for their artistic achievements, commercial success, and broad influence. The band have sold over 300 million albums worldwide, including 111.5 million certified units in the United States, making them one of the world’s best-selling music artists of all time, as well as the second best-selling band of all time in the United States, only behind The Beatles. They have had all of their original studio albums reach the top 10 of the Billboard album chart in the U.S., with six reaching the number one spot. Rolling Stone magazine has described Led Zeppelin as “the heaviest band of all time”, “the biggest band of the ’70s” and “unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history”. Similarly, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame described the band as being “as influential in that decade [70s] as The Beatles were in the prior one”. Just three and a half months before the fateful plane crash that killed Skynyrd members Steve Gaines, his sister, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (of the Honkettes), and lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zandt, Lynyrd Skynyrd played this 4th of July weekend program in Oakland.

While this is only a partial recording of the show, two of the three songs are probably the ones you would skip to anyway: “Sweet Home Alabama” and the legendary closing track that has inspired legions of concert-going yokels to make millions of ironic requests over the years, “Free Bird.” The first track is an excerpt of a standard Skynyrd live show cover, Jimmie Rodgers’ “T for Texas” The guys take six minutes to stretch their legs on this version of “Sweet Home Alabama.” The song had been released three years prior as a response song to the Neil Young numbers “Southern Man” and “Alabama,” which were both critical of southern politics. Ironically, by some reports, Van Zant was wearing a Neil Young t-shirt at the time of this performance.

The show is closed with “Free Bird,” which by many fans’ estimations is only rivaled by Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” as the most epic closing song in rock history. Allen Collins handles most of the five-minute solo, while Gary Rossington plays the “bird-chirp” guitar parts, which are not on the original recording, as well as the slide work on the opening riffs. Billy Powell also plays a masterful piano solo that is unique to the live show.

While Lynyrd Skynyrd would release the multi-platinum Street Survivors in October of 1977, the band’s structure would be fundamentally devastated by the crash of their private Convair 240 that took the lives of three members, as well as the pilots and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and terribly injured every other member, except for Honkette, JoJo Billingsley, who was at home with her children and had reportedly begged the band to quit using the plane after dreaming of such a crash.

From the ashes of this Skynyrd incarnation, Van Zant’s younger brother, Johnny, stepped in and made Lynyrd Skynyrd a popular band once more when they reformed in 1987. Lynyrd Skynyrd is planning to release an unearthed recording of pre-plane crash Skynyrd in 2009.

Lyrics :

My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night

In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go
I’m going where the cold wind blows

In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

Her husband, was a hard working man
Just about a mile from here
His head was found in a driving wheel
But his body never was found

My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night

In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go
I’m going where the cold wind blows

In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night

In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go
I’m going where the cold wind blows

In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

Nirvana taped its performance for MTV Unplugged on November 18, 1993, at Sony Studios in New York City.

Despite the show’s premise, Cobain insisted on running his acoustic guitar through his amplifier and effects pedals. Coletti built a fake box in front of the amplifier to disguise it as a monitor wedge. Coletti said, “It was Kurt’s security blanket. He was used to hearing this guitar through his Fender. He wanted those effects. You can hear it on ‘The Man Who Sold The World.’ It’s an acoustic guitar, but he’s obviously going through an amp.” Nirvana was augmented by guitarist Pat Smear and cellist Lori Goldston, who had been touring with the band. Cobain suggested that the stage be decorated with stargazer lilies, black candles, and a crystal chandelier. Cobain’s request prompted the show’s producer to ask him, “You mean like a funeral?”, to which the singer replied, “Exactly. Like a funeral.”

Digitzz – The Jam

Ik zeg ook ‘Nothing gon’ bring me down today’. De wereld om mij heen vergaat, maar ik ontsnap steeds net aan alles. De clip is geschoten door Kraftstoff samen met special effects-genie Tim Smit. Ik vind de video echt geweldig geworden.”

The Good Stuff EP is vanaf 18 oktober verkrijgbaar via iTunes en te streamen op Spotify.
